and Maxillofacial Surgery?

The Specialty deals with the problems
of the mouth, the jaws and the face. Some of the work we do is detailed below
.The range however is wider and depends on the special interest of the
consultants some colleagues specialise in treatment of malignancies
of the mouth and the face. Some additionally carry out cosmetic surgery
of the nose and face. The routine work of most Hospital units
however includes
Dento-alveolar
surgery surgery
of the tooth bearing components of the jaws, mostly impacted wisdom teeth
.
Temporomandibular
( jaw ) joints, Surgical and non-surgical
management .
Oral
pathology and oral medicine (diseases of the jaws and soft
tissues of the mouth and adjacent structures).
Facial
pain. Supportive care and the management of pain and
anxiety
Facial injuries ( Maxillofacial trauma ) both the flesh and facial bones.
Orthognathic
facial surgery (correction
of facial skeletal developmental deformity)
Tumours Assessment of and
treatment of benign and malignant lesions of
the face, jaws mouth and neck.
Implants if
funded and preprosthetic surgery.
Congenital
abnormalities including clefts of the lip and the palate and
craniofacial surgery are also the province of our specialty but they are usually
carried out in specialist units by tertiary referral
